Physiotherapy

Your dog is limping. A painkiller alone is the wrong answer.

Why limping dogs in Jaipur keep relapsing, what a proper work-up looks like, and how physiotherapy changes the outcome after a fracture or cruciate surgery.

A retriever resting on the floor

A dog limps. It gets a painkiller and a rest instruction. The limp goes. Three weeks later it comes back, usually worse.

This is the most common failed treatment we see, and it fails for a simple reason. The painkiller treated the pain. Nothing treated the cause.

What a proper work-up looks like

Watch the dog walk, then trot, on a hard floor and not on a slippery one. Feel every joint through its range with the dog relaxed. Compare the muscle bulk of the two hind legs, because wastage tells you how long this has really been going on.

Then an X-ray if the joint or bone is in question, at about Rs 800 for the first plate. And a blood panel if the dog is over seven and about to go on a long course of anti-inflammatories, because those drugs are processed by kidneys and liver you have not looked at yet.

The things that actually cause it

Why weight is a medical issue

Eight extra kilos on a Labrador is eight kilos going through a damaged joint at every step. No drug undoes that. A weight target written down with a number, and checked at each visit, does more for a limping dog than a third medicine.

Where physiotherapy changes the result

This is the part almost no clinic in Rajasthan offers, and it is where recoveries are won or lost.

Therapeutic laser for pain and inflammation. Passive range of motion to stop the joint stiffening while it rests. Controlled exercise that rebuilds the muscle that has wasted. And a five minute routine written for you to do at home, every day, because two sessions a week at a clinic will not rebuild a leg on their own.

A course usually runs twice a week for four to six weeks. Progress is measured, not felt. Assessment is Rs 700 with a consult, single sessions Rs 500, a course of eight Rs 3,600.

After surgery, the eight weeks decide it

Two dogs have the same cruciate surgery. One rests in a room for two months and comes out with a wasted leg it never fully uses. One does eight weeks of structured physiotherapy and walks normally. The surgery was identical.

If your dog is limping this week, book a consult. Bring any previous X-rays.
