You found an injured street dog in Jaipur. What to do first.

Practical first aid for an injured street dog or cat in Jaipur: how to move it safely, what never to give, and where to get free treatment.

A street dog resting under a bench

Most people who stop for an injured street dog do the right thing badly, or freeze because they are not sure what the right thing is. Here is the short version.

First, do not get bitten

A frightened animal in pain bites the person helping it. This is not aggression, it is reflex, and it ends the rescue.

Drop a towel, a dupatta or a shirt over the head. It calms the animal and protects you. Approach from the side, not head on. Do not put your face near it, and do not let children help with this part.

Do not give food, water or medicine

This is the instinct everyone has and it is the one that does damage.

No water if the animal is barely conscious, or if the injury is to the mouth, jaw or abdomen. It can go into the lungs. No milk, ever, it helps nothing and causes diarrhoea.

And never a human painkiller. Paracetamol kills cats. Ibuprofen causes kidney failure and stomach bleeding in dogs. If you have already given something, tell the vet exactly what and how much. Nobody will scold you, but we need to know.

Moving the animal

Assume a spinal injury in any road accident case. Slide a board, a flattened carton or a stiff cloth under the animal and keep the spine straight. Do not lift it under the belly like a bundle.

Bleeding heavily: press a clean cloth firmly on the wound and keep pressing. Do not tie a tourniquet.

Broken leg: do not splint it. A badly placed splint does more damage than the fracture. Just support the body and go.

Call the clinic while someone else drives, so a table is ready when you arrive.

What it costs

At ekam vets, nothing. Street animals are examined and treated at no charge, and there is no form to fill before we start. That is not a campaign, it is how our founding vet has practised since 2019.

Long surgeries, admission and implants have real costs. We will tell you what those are and look for a way to cover them with you. Nobody is turned away at the door.

If you feed a colony

Register once at our front desk. After that the animals in your care are billed at a reduced rate and you get a direct number, so you are not queueing behind a grooming appointment with a bleeding dog in your car.
