Tick fever in Jaipur dogs: the signs most owners miss

If you own a dog in Jaipur, tick fever is the illness most likely to reach it, and the one most likely to be caught late.

It is not one disease. Ehrlichia, Babesia and Anaplasma all travel on the same brown dog tick, and a single dog can carry more than one. Which is why the picture is confusing and why owners so often wait.

The early signs owners miss

Nobody misses a dog that collapses. What gets missed is the fortnight before that.

• Off food for a day, then fine, then off again
• Sleeping more, greeting you less at the door
• A nosebleed, or tiny red spots on the belly and gums
• Pale gums instead of healthy pink
• Vague stiffness that moves from one leg to another
• Weight coming off slowly over a month

Any two of these together in a Jaipur dog is a reason to test, not a reason to wait and watch.

You do not need to have seen a tick

This is the single biggest misunderstanding. Owners say the dog is indoors, the dog is clean, there are no ticks. A tick attaches, feeds, and drops off within days. The infection stays for months. By the time the dog is unwell, there is usually nothing left to find on the coat.

What a proper test looks like

A complete blood count is the first step, and the platelet count is the number to watch. Low platelets in a dull dog in this city is tick fever until proven otherwise. A rapid antigen test adds confirmation. In chronic cases, biochemistry tells you what the kidneys and liver have taken.

A CBC here is about Rs 700 and a tick fever screen about Rs 800. Both are back inside the same visit because the lab is in the same building.

Treatment, and the part people stop early

Doxycycline for a full course, usually three to four weeks. Dogs look better in five days. That is exactly when owners stop, and that is when relapse starts. Finish the course.

Severe cases need fluids, sometimes a transfusion, and admission. Chronic cases need a repeat blood count weeks later to confirm the platelets actually recovered rather than assuming they did.

Prevention is cheaper than any of this

Monthly tick control by weight, Rs 400 to Rs 1,200 depending on the animal and the product. Treat the environment as well as the dog, because ticks live in cracks in the floor and the walls, not on your dog. Check ears, between toes and under the collar every week in summer.

If your dog is dull and off food this week, bring it in. A blood count today is a much smaller decision than a transfusion in ten days.
