A clear month by month vaccination and deworming schedule for puppies and adult dogs in India, with what each vaccine covers and what it costs.
Most new puppy owners get three different schedules from four different people. Here is the one we use, and why each part of it exists.
Start at two weeks old, then repeat every two weeks until twelve weeks. After that, monthly until six months, then every three months for life. A puppy full of worms does not respond properly to a vaccine, which is why this comes before anything else.
Anti-rabies is about Rs 450 and the multi-component vaccine about Rs 900. In India rabies vaccination is not optional and not negotiable, for your dog and for the people around it.
Kittens need their own schedule, usually starting at eight or nine weeks with a feline vaccine covering panleukopenia and the respiratory viruses, a second dose three to four weeks later, and rabies from twelve weeks. Around Rs 900 a dose.
A puppy is not protected the day it gets the last shot. Immunity takes about two weeks to build. Until two weeks after the final dose, keep your puppy off public ground, away from unknown dogs and out of pet shops.
Parvovirus survives in soil for months. It is the single most common way a well loved, fully purchased, indoor puppy dies in this city.
It happens. Do not start again from zero and do not panic. Bring the card in and we will work out what is still needed. Usually it is one or two doses, not the whole course.
